Treatment at EDCMT

EDCMT Treatment for Patients

Treatment at EDCMT begins with exploring all the ways your eating disorder affects you. Our designated intake team - which always includes a therapist and registered dietitian - will meet with you to better understand your symptoms and then make a recommendation on which treatment program will be most effective for you. During your initial meeting with our intake team, we will schedule a follow up conversation to discuss your goals, plans, and to answer any questions you may have about our treatment recommendations.

TELE-HEALTH

EDCMT offers our outpatient program virtually for patients outside of the Bozeman area. Individuals needing this level of care can connect with specialized eating disorder trained therapists and dietitians, giving Montanans increased access to the care they need. These engaging virtual programs are ideal for patients who live in areas with limited access to specialty eating disorder treatment, have family, work or school obligations or who are apprehensive about receiving treatment in-person.

Many Types of Treatment

During this time, you will have access to many types of treatment, which are listed below. Click on each item to learn a little more.

PSYCHOTHERAPY:

Individual

You can expect to meet with your personal counselor one to three times per week. During these meetings, you will explore the numerous factors contributing to your eating disorder and gain an understanding of how those factors have translated into disordered eating behaviors. Individual sessions are 45-50 minutes in length. Family sessions are 60-120 minutes.

Group

Process groups are dynamic, interactive forums where EDCMT patients support one another while sharing and exploring personal experiences and connecting to peer support. These groups are intended to help motivate recovery, build trust amongst peers on the recovery path, and foster respect, courage and curiosity within each group member.

Family

We know an eating disorder affects the entire family unit. We also know there are many reasons eating disorders develop, some of which might include or be influenced by dynamics in the family setting.  For these reasons, inviting family members to participate in therapy sessions is crucial for each patient’s path to recovery.

During family therapy sessions, EDCMT counseling staff will help you and your family members understand the specific factors that trigger disordered eating behaviors. You will also learn methods to combat these factors. Understanding this will empower your family members to best support you in your healing process.

Multi-family Group

Once a month, EDCMT hosts a group for you and the family members you wish to invite, such as parents, siblings and partners. This interactive forum is an opportunity for families to share both their unique and similar to experiences of living with an eating disorder. Discussing the commonality of experiences, they begin to formulate an understanding of the nature of symptoms related to the eating disorders. Participants can learn more about their loved ones through interaction with others they ordinarily would not come into contact with.

NUTRITION:

Nutrition Counseling

An important part of recovering from an eating disorder is changing your relationship with eating and food. This part of treatment at EDCMT is guided by a nutrition counselor, also known as a Registered Dietitian (RD).

Where psychotherapy helps to uncover the drives that hold the eating disorder in place, a nutritionist’s role is to help you figure out a new relationship with food. This is the path towards what we call “intuitive eating” or eating according to your appetite. This means re-learning and responding appropriately to hunger cues, rather than eating what you think you ought to eat, based on how much you ate earlier on or how much or how little you worked out. Nutrition counseling is not about learning to eat “healthy” but about understanding how food fuels the body and mind.

Dining Out Challenges

Dining out at local restaurants as a group creates positive food and social experiences while encouraging you to try different cuisines and exploring new tastes.

Meal Support

Meal support includes meal experiences, meal challenges and shared meal times in a group setting. This is a time for you to be understood and supported while nourishing your body and exploring your changing relationship with food and eating. These experiences are designed to address eating challenges as well as providing easy socialization.

Grocery Shopping Outings

Grocery store outings provide a supportive environment to learn and shop in what is often considered a stressful and most challenging setting.

OTHER THERAPY:

Expressive Art Therapies

Art therapy group is an experiential, interactive process group. You will experiment with self- expression and discovery using different art forms such as drawing, painting, and sculpture work. These modes of expression can allow you to identify and express thoughts and feelings that are hard to describe in words.

Restorative Yoga

Restorative yoga is taught by a certified yoga instructor who intimately understands the recovery process and the need for body-mind connection.

One size fits none

Because every EDCMT patient is different, we do not offer a “one size fits all” approach to treatment. Your journey through our program will be as unique as you are. The speed of your recovery will change over time as healing occurs, and based on your specific needs.

man writing in journal

I feel as though I have been treated and respected as an adult, with an acknowledgment of my wish, and need, to fit treatment into the functionality of my life. Treatment options have been flexible around work [and EDCMT’s] work with insurance cannot be overstated. It makes treatment possible.
